CRITERIA FOR ADVANCED IKKU SHOTOKAN GRADING

SENIOR BROWN BELT/1st KYU

 

Students must train on a regular basis in Traditional and Sport Karate.

Students must attend extra classes/courses.

Students must be proactive in their club.

Students must know their syllabus and be able to perform their syllabus to the very best of their ability.

 

JUNIOR BLACK BELT LEVEL 1,2,3,4 and 5

Student must train on a regular basis in Traditional and Sport Karate.

Students must attend extra classes/courses

Students must compete at local level in the discipline of Kata

Students wishing to grade to the rank of Level 3 and above must be proactive in their club, helping with Coaching etc.

Students must know their syllabus and would be expected to perform to the very best of their ability.

 

SHODAN/1st DAN

Students must train on a regular basis in Traditional and Sport Karate.

Students must attend extra classes/courses (for 6 months prior to their Grading on average 4/5 hours training/practice per week would be required).

Students must compete at local level in the discipline of Kata at least once in the 6 months prior to their Grading.

Students must have an up to date First Aid qualification.

Students must have a Child Protection/Safe Guard Certification.

Students must have an Introduction to Coaching Qualification Certificate.

Students must be proactive in their club and with the IKKU.

Students must know their syllabus and would be expected to perform to the very best of their ability.

NIDAN/2nd DAN

As Shodan.

It is highly recommended that students have a Level One Coaching Certificate but this is not compulsory.

Students must have attended a Referee training course.

Minimum age for 1st Dan is 18 years. From 1st Dan to 2nd Dan the minimum duration is two years unless you have gone through the Junior Black Belt Levels which reduces the duration depending on what Junior Black belt Level was reached. The minimum duration between 2nd Dan and 3rd Dan is Three Years and the minimum age is 21 years. Minimum age from 3rd Dan to 4th Dan is 4 Years, 5 years from 4th Dan to 5th Dan and 6 years from 5th Dan to 6th Dan. All Ranks above 6th Dan are awarded to the Individuals but the minimum duration from 6th Dan to 7th Dan is Seven years and so on.

The Grading Syllabus is there for everyone and is our Goal Setting but students can come and train at their leisure with absolutely no pressure to go up the Ranks. This is a personal journey and each individual will eventually decide what direction is best for them.
